Boy meets girl, girl and boy hook up and have awkward morning, sounds like just another day in the life of a college student right? Expect what if the boy was an English Prince and the girl is the daughter of the Royal Head of Security and the awkward wake-up is brought on by the Prince’s security detail. Welcome to the world of the English Crown in E!’s first scripted series The Royals.

The main plot of the series is the death of the Crown Prince, Robert and the after-effects it has on the royal family.  His “spare now heir” brother Prince Liam (William MoseleyChronicles of Narnia“) went from college student hooking up with a pretty American gal to the next King of England, his twin sister Princess Eleanor (Alexandra Park) spends her time getting drunk and high in Paris, Queen Helena (Elizabeth Hurley) is just trying to keep her children in line and keep as much of their “dirty bits” off the tabloid covers, and King Simon (Vincent Regan) wants to abolish the whole Monarchy after his son’s death.

So, is this the juicy drama E! has been selling for almost a year? The answer is no, true there are some fun part but most of the hour was dry. The Queen comes off as uncaring and unloving, while the Princess is just another rich spoiled brat. The King’s brother plots to try to steal the crown are bored and tired and his daughters serve as mild comedic relief.

However, while I don’t think the show lived up to all its hype, of course I keep the season pass on the TiVo each week. Sure it can be dry in some parts but let’s face, here in America, a country that fought so hard to free ourselves from the English Crown, we are obsessed with anything Royal.

This also seems like a great time to mention that my good friends Heather and Jessica of Go Fug Yourself are releasing their new book The Royal We in a couple of weeks. Make sure you pre-order here.
